31.7% of websites haven't updated their copyright year

• Written by Eric Higgins

Over the last 5 days, we proofread and error-checked more than 5,000 websites.

31.7% listed ©2024 or earlier. (The rest either had no copyright year or were updated to ©2025.)

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 19.9% listed ©2024 - fair enough, it’s only been a week since 2025 started.
  • 5.6% listed ©2023
  • 2.5% listed ©2022
  • 3.7% listed ©2021 or earlier - no excuses here.

Does a copyright year really matter? It depends. On what? On whether you’re Walmart or not.

If Walmart.com forgot to update their website (they didn’t, by the way), you’d still shop there without a second thought.

But you’re not Walmart.com. And 100% of the people landing on your website don’t know who you are or what you offer.

An outdated copyright is just one signal among many. But when most users leave a website in under a minute, every little detail matters.

Think about it: If you were choosing a service provider like a web development agency and one option listed ©2020 while the others were updated to ©2025, which one would stand out?

If you want peace of mind knowing your website is error free with no [outdated copyright], no typos, and no dead links, check out TripleChecker.

Your website will thank you. (It won’t, but you get the idea.)
