The power of affiliate programs

• Written by Eric Higgins

One recent initiative at TripleChecker that worked better than expected was adding an affiliate program. I’ve always viewed affiliate programs as a fool’s errand. At prior companies, we saw very little success when pushing for customer referrals simply by offering a revenue share.

At the same time, they were like a holy grail—the idea of a global sales team incentivized to promote your product in a win-win revenue share arrangement, with zero risk to the company, was enticing. Given the minimal implementation effort required, we decided to give it a try, though I had fairly low expectations.

For it to work, these things needed to happen:

  • Individuals would reach out with interest in partnering.
  • Those partners would ideally have large followings.
  • They would actively promote our tool using their affiliate link.
  • Their efforts would result in new subscriptions.

This is one of those times I’m happy to be wrong. Since adding an affiliate section to our website, influencers have started contacting us directly. Not only has their work created meaningful awareness around our product, but that awareness has also resulted in new subscriptions.

We’re lucky to have a product that’s universally applicable—basically anyone with a website or blog can benefit. This also means that any individual or company with a social presence likely has followers who could be good fits for TripleChecker. We decided to go with a 50/50 revenue share split to maximize interest from potential partners and encourage their effort.
